Some cultures believe that each new life is the universe's way of fulfilling a departed individual's dying wish to ascend to an even better place. The universe, in its straightforward wisdom, can only interpret that literally - and determines that the only better place than any given moment of life itself is an earlier stage of it, wherein the opportunities to discover, learn, and experience its many joys, sorrows and surprises for the first time are even richer and more numerous.
If true, it would mean that the closest thing to "heaven" that any living person can ever truly get is each moment, as it's happening in real time. Maybe our thoughts, and loved ones, and discoveries, and curiosities, and even our senses themselves represent the only chances we'll ever have to build a "better place" for ourselves within the otherwise unlit and infinite existential recesses of our own minds.
Maybe that potential is the best it ever gets.
